ICC Issues Arrest Warrants in Libya Situation

27 June 2011 by Administrator

The Pre-Trial Chamber (PTC) of the International Criminal Court (ICC) has today issued warrants of arrest for Muammar Mohammed Abu Minyar Gaddafi, Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi and Abdullah Al-Senussi for crimes against humanity allegedly carried out across Libya.

In accordance with Article 58 of the Rome Statue, the PTC held that that there are "reasonable grounds to believe that, following the events in Tunisia and Egypt which led to the departure of their respective Presidents in the early months of 2011, a State policy was designed at the highest level of the Libyan State machinery and aimed at deterring and quelling, by any means, including by the use of lethal force, the demonstrations of civilians against Gaddafi's regime which started in February 2011".
